We design our RYA sailing courses with a keen emphasise on having fun whilst learning, we create an atmosphere were like minded people can meet and learn whilst having fun. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to improve your skills, whether your want to achieve RYA accreditation or just learn to sail confidently, our team of RYA qualified instructors will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time out on the water.

RYA Level 1 Sailing (adults) 2 day course
This course comprises of six lessons of 2.5 hours each. This will be suited to those wanting to achieve a competent level of sailing ability. The course provides a short introduction to sailing for novices. We offer this course as a single module with 15 hours of tuition spread over your holiday time or weekends. The course content includes rigging, rope work and knots, practical sailing manoeuvres, clothing and equipment, rules of the road and safety. By the end of the course, participants will have had a basic understanding of boat handling techniques and background knowledge. It is recommended that all participants consolidate this short introduction with the Level 2 course.

RYA Level 2 Sailing (adults) 2 day course
The RYA Level 2 Sailing Course is comprised of six lessons of 2.5 hours each. This programme is suited to those wanting to achieve a competent level of sailing ability. The RYA Level 2 Sailing Course encourages development of the Start Sailing Level 1 skills, provides further sailing knowledge for people with some limited previous experience, or can be used to bridge the gap between small craft sailing and larger yachts. The RYA Level 2 Sailing Course covers practical sessions include reefing afloat, rope work, sailing techniques and manoeuvres, clothing and equipment, rules of the road and safety on board. By the end of the course, the successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds.

RYA Level 3 Sailing (adults) 2 day course
The objectives of this programme are to offer skills development programmes and broader sailing experiences at different venues in more challenging boats and to bridge the gap between Level 2 and the 5 Advanced Modules.
There is a lot of flexibility to tailor the programme to your needs but it would include most of the following modules:
Consolidation of Level 1 & 2 skills
Introduction to sailing with Spinnakers
5 Essentials sailing (better transitions, go faster on all points of sail)
Fast boats (including Trapezing, using Telltales)
Racing techniques and tactics (practical)
Faster sailing without the Rudder
Experience: Level 2

RYA Stage 1 (kids) 2 day course
At Harbour Challenge you can start when you are ready for the adventure. We use the tried and tested, RYA method of learning for teaching our youngsters to sail. This means that everything is broken down into “bite sized chunks” and for the youth section, that involves the teaching being divided up into 4 easy, fun filled stages that the kids just love. When joining a Stage 1 Course you will be in very safe hands and made to feel very welcome. In fact, to start with, we’ll do everything for you (well nearly everything). Your first sail will be under the watchful eye of one of the club’s experienced sailors, they’ll take you out for a “joy ride” so you get the feel of the movement of the boat and how much fun it really is!

RYA Stage 2 Sailing (kids) 2 day course
Done Stage 1, got the certificate? Now it’s time to pick up the pace and get you sailing out there on your own. Up for that? Then read on.This stage is all about getting your confidence level high, so that you are able to control the boat by yourselves, but still with an instructor or experienced sailor onboard, or if your confidence is “through the roof”, sailing single-handed under supervision. The Captain of your own craft! Every minute will be exiting, and you will get a guaranteed adrenaline rush at the end of every day. So hurry and book now! But be warned, after Stage 2, sailing becomes very addictive!! Our courses are always quickly filled up, so don’t delay, contact us ASAP and to get booked in.

RYA Stage 3 Sailing (kids)5 day course
Youth Training Scheme Stage 3 – Getting Good This is the “Big One” and at the successful completion of Stage 3 you will be a competent light wind sailor able to control your own boat all by yourself and be the envy of all your mates too!
A few of the tasks you will master on your stage 3 course are:
Rigging without assistance.
Launch and recovery without assistance in onshore wind.
Knots – Bowline, clove hitch and rolling hitch.
Sail a triangular course.
Man overboard recovery.
Applying the five essentials.
Tacking and gybing.
Preparing for a tow.
Righting a capsize as helm or crew.
Timings: These run from 10am – 4pm

RYA Stage 4 Sailing (kids) 5 day course
Youth Training Scheme Stage 4 – You have arrived A Stage 4 certificate means that students have the skills necessary to sail a double handed boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat. Passing this course is the natural entry point for the advanced courses in the National Sailing Scheme. By the end of the course the students should be able to:
Rig, launch and recover in any wind condition.
Set up a boat according to weather conditions using sail and rig controls.
Tie and know the uses of figure of eight, round turn two half hitches, reef knot, bowline, clove hitch, rolling hitch, sheet bend.
Demonstrate sailing techniques and manoeuvres from Stage 3 in a crewed boat.
Communicate effectively as helm and crew.
Effectively use the 5 essentials by helm and crew including use of tell – tales.
Recover a man overboard.
Demonstrate returning to a beach, jetty or mooring safely in any wind direction.

Advanced Sailing Courses
Seamanship – 2 day course
The Seamanship course would involve basic skills in safe handling of the ropes, having basic knot tying etc. Also making sure that your crew and helm skills are up to date

This two day course helps to improve you’re personal sailing skills, while working on navigation and planning, setting off, anchoring, coming to shore, getting to know your boat and of course basic handling.
